Fanlisting?

A fanlisting is a giant list of fans from all around the world of a particular subject, in this case, Kawada Shougo from the Battle Royale novel, movie and manga.

Battle Royale?

Battle Royale is a Japanese novel written by Takami Koushun. It has been translated into English and released by Viz in the United States. It also has been made into a movie (which varies slightly from the novel) and a manga series. (The original Japanese version of the manga closely follows the novel but has additional back story; an English adaptation was released in the US by Viz and that version varies quite a lot from the Japanese series. The manga is a lot more sexually and violently graphic than the novel and movie.)

Battle Royale tells the story of a junior high school class that is brought to a deserted island because of a government program and forced to kill each other until only one student survives and is the winner. As you read or watch it, you see not only what happens to people in a horrific and extremely stressful situation, but also what types of lives these people lived before this program. It is an amazing novel (and movie) that forces you to think about many (political and social) issues and look at the world and the people you live in it with in a different way.

Kawada Shougo?

NOTE: The following section will contain major spoilers for the novel! Additonal information on Shougo in the movie and manga will be added at a later date.

Kawada Shougo is one of the main characters in Battle Royale. He is boy #5 and is given a Remington 870 as a weapon. He meets Nanahara Shuya and Nakagawa Noriko shortly after the game has begun (the first morning; they arrived on the island the previous afternoon/night). He saves both of them from another student and then joins up with them. Shougo knows a lot about the program and seems to know exactly what to do and how to do it, he also knows a lot about first aid since his father was a doctor. We find out that Shougo has been in the program the year before and won (which explains why he knows so much this go around; his father died while he was in the last program because he most likely made a fuss over his son being forced into it). He won the first time by killing as many people as he could while searching for his girlfriend Onuki Keiko (another student at his school). When he finally found her, she was already dead.

Despite how hardened one would assume being forced to go through the program twice must have made Shougo, he is not heartless. He becomes friends with Shuya and Noriko risking his life for them. He has a plan that will allow them all to survive the program and it was very close to a sucess. Sadly, he ends up dying as they are on their way to freedom from wounds he got as a result of his fight with Kiriyama Kazou. Even though he dies, he does so with a sense of peace and fi

I think, if you know about Shougo, it should be obvious why I named this fanlisting Survivor. Shougo is my favorite character in Battle Royale and one of my favorite characters in a novel period. He made the book for me (and the movie) and I was very sad when he died. He is an amazing character who goes through incredibly terrible things and still is able to have a sense of humor and care about people.
