Saishu Heiki Kanojo (which translates to She, The Ultimate Weapon), better known as Saikano for short began life as a seven volume long manga series by Takahashi Shin. It was later made into a thirteen episode anime series. Both the anime and manga series have been released by Viz in the US. A two episode OAV, Saikano: Another Love Song was released in 2006. In January 2006 a live action movie was release (English title: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet).
Saikano tells the story of Chise, a shy and clumsy high school girl who gets turned into Japan's 'ultimate weapon' by the government. It is an extremely beautiful, yet tragic and heartbreaking tale of a world torn apart by war and the two people who try desperately to fall in love and stay in love despite the chaos, destruction, and torment that surrounds them. Saikano is one of the saddest manga and anime series I have ever watched or read. Despite how tragic and depressing it is, it is a beautifully moving tale of what makes people truly human (the struggle to simply love and exist) and something I think everyone should read and/or watch.
