Basic InfoThis fanlisting was originally owned by Krystal, who was kind enough to allow me to adopt it in October 2006.Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori, also known by the names Anatolia Story and Red River, is a twenty-eight volume long shoujo manga series by Shinohara Chie. It is currently being released by VIZ in the US. Suzuki Yuri is your typical fifteen year old girl. She has just shared her first kiss with her long time friend Satoshi and life is going really well, when she finds herself suddenly transported to Hattusa in the 14th century (who knew trying to avoid water would be so hard?). As if that isn't bad enough, the person responsible, Queen Nakia, is planning to use her as a human sacrifice. Luckily for Yuri, Kail, steps in and saves her from his stepmother, making her his concubine shortly after. Even though Kail is reportedly a lady's man, Yuri tries hard to resist his advances and focus on a way to get back home. Before Yuri realizes it, she begins to make friends with and grow attached to those around her (and in the process gets herself involved with the Hittite people, politics, and wars). It isn't long before Kail and Yuri fall in love. Now instead of wondering when she will be able to get home, she starts to wonder if she wants to anymore. Red River is an amazing and epic shoujo series. I have never been a giant fan of time travel/historical shoujo series and put off reading this series for a long time. When I finally did give it a try after much encouragement from friends, I couldn't put it down. Perhaps one of the series strongest points is its characters. Yuri is a really refreshing shoujo heroine - she is incredibly strong, always tries her hardest, and instead of waiting constantly to be rescued, is always thinking of ways to handle and/or fix problems on her own (even if sometimes that may get her into even more trouble, she always learns from it and continues to work and try even harder!). Kail is a character impossible to not fall in love with imo. He holds firm, at all times, to his beliefs and convictions, his word, and his heart. All of the secondary characters (even the ones you may find yourself hating) are memorable. By the end of the manga I doubt anyone could forget (or not love) Tito, Zananza, Rusafa, Ilbani, and Ursula to name just a few of those secondary characters (these also happen to my favorites). Besides all of the many wonderful characters the art and costumes in it are beautiful and the story is always interesting, emotional, exciting, and gripping. Also, I need to mention it has a fabulous ending (probably one of my top five favorite manga endings). This is a shoujo series too wonderful to pass up!
