Bob is a spirit of a wizard who Harry Dresden (also a wizard, but a live one) posseses. His soul occupies his skull (his spirit was put there as punishment after he was executed for performing serious dark magic) which used to belong to Dresden's uncle. Bob taught Harry when he was younger and living with his uncle and is a continuious source of companionship and help to Harry today. Bob is a invaluable source of magically knowledge and it becomes clear that he has strong bonds of friendship to Harry. In my very humble opinion, Bob steals the show and is by far the coolest character in the series. :)
